Street naming and numbering

How to name a street or property

The council deals with the naming and numbering of new streets, individual properties and changes to a property's name.

To register or change an address you must:

  • include clear site plan showing the position of the property
  • pay the correct fee

Apply to register a new address or change an existing address using our:

When we get your application, we check your documents and payment to make sure the name is unique and won't cause any confusion to the emergency services or to postal delivery services. This process takes around 28 working days.

In new developments, we try to recognise local history or traditions and try to stay consistent with other names in an area that already has a theme.

More information can be found in our street naming and numbering policy (PDF, 385 KB).
