Local people are being invited to roll up their sleeves and help care for two important wildlife sites in Fremington this autumn.

Two volunteer conservation days are being held in September and October, giving residents the opportunity to help maintain valuable wildflower habitats while enjoying a day outdoors.

The first event, Fremington Local Nature Reserve Meadow Day, will take place at Leat Meadow on Tuesday 15 September, from 10am to 3pm. Volunteers are asked to meet in the car park by the parish council offices on Beechfield Road before the event begins.

The second event, Meadow Day at Fremington Cuttings, will be held on Saturday 3 October from 10am to 3pm. Volunteers should meet at the car park at the far end of Fremington Quay ready for a day of conservation and community action.

Working in partnership with Fremington Parish Council, Devon County Council and Home Farm Marsh Volunteers, the events will focus on raking and removing cut vegetation from the meadows. Removing the cut material is an important part of meadow management, helping to maintain flower-rich habitats and encourage orchids and other wildflowers to flourish in future years.

Councillor Ricky Knight, Lead Member for Climate and Environment at North Devon Council, said: “These volunteer days are a great opportunity for local people to get involved in looking after some of Fremington’s wonderful natural spaces. The work our volunteers do makes a real difference to the wildlife and wildflowers that make these sites so special. Whether you’re a regular volunteer or have never taken part in a conservation day before, we’d love to see you there.”

All tools will be provided. Volunteers are asked to bring a drink and lunch, along with suitable clothing and stout footwear.
