A North Devon Community Lottery player from Fremington is celebrating after winning £1,000 in a national super draw.
David Dixon was the lucky winner in a recent monthly super draw made up of participants from community lotteries nationwide.
David is a member of Barnstaple Pilot Gig Club CIO and plays the North Devon Community Lottery each week to help raise extra funds for the club, with 50p from each £1 ticket he buys going back to it.
The club has raised more than £1,400 through the North Devon Community Lottery, with funds supporting its ongoing activities and future development. As part of this, the club is preparing a planning application to extend the Boathouse. The proposed extension would enable the six rowing machines to be relocated from the ground floor, creating space for a dedicated workshop to support boat maintenance.
North Devon Council launched the lottery in 2024 to create a new funding stream for local causes, while offering supporters the chance to win cash prizes along the way. In that time lottery supporters have raised more than £80,000 for good causes close to their hearts, with £19,000 in cash prizes won in return.
David Dixon, said: “I’m delighted to have received such a generous prize and excited about how it can be put to good use. I’m currently exploring setting up a £500 bursary to support junior members in developing their skills within gig rowing, while the remaining £500 will go towards holidays later this year.
“I take part in the lottery as a way of supporting the club, and it’s a great bonus to have the chance to win a prize at the same time.”
Councillor David Worden, Chair of North Devon Council, said: "Congratulations to David on his win. It is great to see his support of an organisation so close to his heart rewarded with this prize.
“The North Devon Community Lottery was set up to benefit local organisations and clubs such as Barnstaple Pilot Gig Club. Each ticket sold means more funding for charities, groups and not-for-profit organisations who do incredible work in our community every single day, as well as having the chance to win an amazing cash prize such as this one."
Each £1 ticket sees 50p go to a good cause of the player's choice, while a further 10p goes into the lottery's central fund. The other 40p goes towards prize money and running costs.
A jackpot of £25,000 is up for grabs each week by matching the six-digit draw number, as well as other cash prizes of £2,000, £250 and £25.
