As a new year begins, the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon's Potted History project is revving up for a flying start under the capable leadership of archaeologist Sonia Guerrini.
Sonia took up her post at the beginning of December to deliver Phase 1 of the project, and the museum is delighted to welcome her to Barnstaple. An archaeologist with 20 years of experience across Spain, Egypt and the UK, Sonia has taught at two universities and most recently worked with the British Museum on post‑excavation archives similar to those held in Barnstaple.
One of Sonia’s first tasks was to meet with project volunteers. At the initial briefing, approximately 30 volunteers of all ages came together—some with archaeological experience and others entirely new to the subject, but all brimming with enthusiasm. Volunteers have already begun work on the project.
Significant progress has also been made behind the scenes. A new project office and store has been established at Green Lanes, and volunteers have helped move extensive archaeological site records, photographs and plans, along with around 1,000 boxes of medieval and 17th‑century finds. With preparations complete, the research phase will begin this month.
'Potted History' is a new project that will uncover and share Barnstaple’s rich archaeological past and is supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Sonia Guerrini, project archaeologist said: "I’m delighted to be part of this important project to revitalise Barnstaple’s archaeological collection. Working with the people who love this town is a real privilege — I’m proud of the progress we’ve made and excited for what the new year will bring."
Linda Blanchard, former Director of Excavations in Barnstaple and Project Advisor said: “Sonia is breathing new life into a project that has been needed for 40 years. She has put together a great team of volunteers and I have high hopes for this first phase of the project."
