The nation will commemorate the 80th anniversaries of Victory in Europe (VE) Day on 8 May 2025 and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day on 15 August, marking the end of the Second World War and honouring those who served.

Across North Devon, communities are being invited to take part in a variety of events to reflect, remember and celebrate.

A full schedule of commemorative events is planned across the district. Highlights include:

  • A VE Festival hosted by The Veterans’ Charity in Barnstaple Pannier Market on Sunday 11 May, featuring live music, historical displays (including living history), street party festivities, food and drink vendors, and community entertainment.
  • Free showings of a new commemorative film exploring North Devon’s wartime story.
  • Craft activities, historical talks, and exhibitions in Barnstaple Pannier Market between 8-10 May.
  • A nostalgic Tommy Tea on 8 May at the Assembly Rooms in South Molton, offering 1940s music, dancing, cream teas, and a community raffle
  • A special VE Day market at South Molton Pannier Market on 8 May, with live music, a community raffle, and themed stalls to celebrate the occasion.
  • Ilfracombe Town Council will host a commemorative gathering at the Clapping Circle on Ilfracombe’s seafront at 10:50am on Thursday 8 May, with reflection and remembrance beginning at 11:00am.
  • A cream tea dance and exhibitions around Queen Anne’s Café and The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon on 10 May.
  • Flag-raisings and bell-ringing across the district as visible signs of tribute.

Full details of district wide events can be found on the council's website.

Hannah Harrington, Place Manager at North Devon Council, said: “These anniversaries are an important moment for communities to come together, not just to celebrate peace, but to honour those who endured hardship and gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom. I encourage everyone to take part in this historic occasion.”
