Spatial Development Strategies

Information about Spatial Development Strategies

What are Spatial Development Strategies (SDSs)?

SDSs are long-term spatial plans which lay out broad locations for growth, development and infrastructure over a large area, whereas local plans cover smaller areas and focus on more detailed, site-specific allocations.

SDSs sit above local plans and enable local planning authorities like us to co-ordinate resources and plan more effectively.

Our Spatial Development Strategy

Whilst we do not yet have confirmation of which strategic authority will be preparing our SDS, not the area which it will cover, the government has confirmed that emerging SDSs should not delay councils preparing their local plans.

When preparing the new local plan, we will work closely with other councils, partners and service providers to ensure our plans and priorities fit with the emerging SDS.
