North Devon Council’s hackney carriage fare tariff been amended. The new tariff is effective from the 7 May 2026.
A meter test is required for those drivers with existing licensed vehicles wishing to utilise the amended tariff, and for the grant of a vehicle licence.
An appointment must be made for a meter test, for which a fee of £29 applies.
Please go to our booking page to book a test and pay the required fee.
Meter tests will be undertaken at Brynsworthy Environment Centre, Roundswell, Barnstaple, EX31 3NP. Please report to ‘Licensing’ using the telephone in the foyer.
Please be mindful that the Council is not a meter agent. An appointment with an agent must be made in advance of your meter test in order to have your meter software updated with the new fares. This is an area outside the control of the Council, and for which the Council holds no responsibility. Please ensure that you seek information from your agent about the software to be entered, for example the number of bank holidays dates you will gain from the update.
Please further note that the Council’s Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy indicates that:
All taxi meters must contain either the current Council authorised fares for licensed hackney carriages (tariff) or the immediately preceding tariff, (thus a choice of two North Devon Council tariffs available to proprietors. Taxi operators must obtain from their taxi meter manufacturer or agent confirmation, in writing, of all tariffs programmed into their meters, other than the North Devon Council tariffs. This confirmation must be supplied to the Licensing Authority on demand so that the Licensing Authority can verify that the tariffs do not exceed the tariffs set by the Authority.
