Residents taking part in the trial will have received a letter and information leaflet confirming they have been selected.
If you have not received a letter and leaflet, please do not place soft plastics in your kerbside recycling. Any recycling containing soft plastics from non-participating households will be classed as contaminated and may not be collected.
Soft plastic is the lightweight, flexible plastic packaging that has not previously been accepted in your kerbside recycling. During this trial, selected households can bag up these materials and place them in their green recycling bag for collection on their usual recycling day.
Currently, only 6% of plastic bags and wrapping are recycled in the UK. We hope this trial will help us work towards introducing a future service that allows North Devon to recycle better together.
What soft plastics can be recycled?
Selected households can recycle:
- Plastic carrier bags
- Bread bags
- Frozen food bags
- Cereal liners
- Toilet roll wrapping
- Multipack wrapping
- Salad, pasta and rice bags
- Cheese, fish and meat wrapping
- Crisp, sweet, biscuit and chocolate wrappers
- Removable film lids
- Bubble wrap and cling film
How should I present my soft plastics?
If your household has been selected for the trial, please:
- Place your soft plastics inside an old bread bag or carrier bag
- Tie the top securely with a double knot
- Put the bag inside your existing green recycling bag
Items we cannot accept
Please do not include:
- Food and detergent pouches
- Balloons
- Blister packs
- Disposable gloves
- Plastic straws
What happens to the soft plastic after collection?
Collected soft plastics will be kept separate from other recycling materials and baled.
The material will then be sent to Jayplas sites for reprocessing.
The plastic film will be recycled into raw materials that can be used to manufacture new plastic packaging.
