Council appeals for home adaptations contractors
16 December 2021
Skilled contractors are being sought by North Devon Council to assist in the delivery of high quality disabled facilities property adaptions.
The council is looking for professional and established contractors due to an increase in demand for adaptations to older and disabled people's homes. Adaptations such as ramps, level access showers, specialist kitchens and extensions are funded through the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) for the purpose of allowing people to live independently and safely. DFG adaptions can be made to owner occupiers, tenants of housing associations and private tenants.
The council requires construction companies that act as principal contractor and either have each specialist trade within their workforce or available to them as subcontractors. Interested contractors should provide the council with evidence of their competence in carrying out adaptations, especially for individuals with varying levels of disabilities and complex needs. Site visits may be organised to evidence the quality and finish of works previously completed by the contractor.
The council says that successful contractors will also have the appropriate skills and knowledge to do the job safety and without risks to health and safety. It requires:
- confirmation of compliance with relevant legislation (CDM2015 regulations)
- copies of valid company insurance (Employers Liability, Public Liability and Products Liability)
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks
- registration with Supplying The Southwest Portal
Head of Planning, Housing and Health at North Devon Council, Jeremy Mann says: "The increase in demand for home adaptions funded through the DFG has meant that we require additional contractors with the required skills and experience. This means more than just the practical skills; we also require individuals with excellent interpersonal skills who understand the sensitivities of the individual they are carrying out works for."
Interested contractors can contact the grants team on firstname.lastname@example.org who will arrange for the most appropriate officer to contact them. More information on DFGs is available on the council's website.
