New pods provide shelter for Barnstaple's rough sleepers
26 July 2022
Two new temporary accommodation pods have been installed at Hardaway Head car park in Barnstaple, adding to the suite of support offered by the district's Enhanced Outreach team.
The pods have been purchased thanks to funding secured by North Devon Council and will provide safe overnight temporary accommodation for two rough sleepers at any one time. The pods are available through referrals to North Devon's Enhanced Outreach Service.
Residents who stay in the pods will receive the support they require from the Enhanced Outreach team to enable them to progress into more settled accommodation. The team - made up of staff from the council, Devon Partnership Trust, Together Drug and Alcohol Services, the Freedom Community Alliance charity and Northern Devon Healthcare Trust - supports individuals to come off the streets into accommodation.
The Enhanced Outreach team says that, in the last month, it has either housed or moved to longer term accommodation 13 rough sleeping clients. There are still seven rough sleepers in the district and three of those are currently refusing the offer of accommodation. Officers are continuing to work all individuals concerned, and are seeking appropriate accommodation for those who want it.
Lead Member for Housing at North Devon Council, Councillor Nicola Topham says: "We are really pleased to have been able to install these additional temporary accommodation pods in Barnstaple. We installed four pods at the Freedom Centre earlier this year and they are proving to be extremely successful in providing a safe haven to some of the most vulnerable members of our community while more settled accommodation is sought. Not every rough sleeper will accept the offer of bricks and mortar help, but our Enhanced Outreach team continues to work extremely hard to provide each individual with the support they need, however that looks."
Residents are asked to use the Street link website to report a rough sleeper they are concerned about.
Anyone who believes they are at risk of becoming homeless should get in touch with North Devon Council as soon as possible on 01271 388870 or email email@example.com.
