Community invited to launch event to celebrate new woodland
16 November 2022
A launch event to celebrate the extension of Yeo Valley Woodland in Barnstaple is taking place on Sunday 4 December and the North Devon community is invited to come along.
Earlier in the year, the council released plans to expand the community woodland by planting 24,000 new trees over the winter period which would link the three existing woodlands together, thanks to a successful Forestry Commission's England Woodland Creation Offer.
Planting of the trees will take place over the next two years, with the bulk of them being planted this winter, starting at the launch event.
The fun-filled event will start at 11 am and finish at 3:30 pm, and activities will include:
- Tree planting
- Guided plant walk
- Roasting and eating chestnuts
- Making of willow bird feeders
- Hedge-laying demonstrations
- Learning about forests in the stone age
- Learning how to start a fire by friction
- Borderline Morris dancers
Lead Member for the Environment at North Devon Council, Cllr Netti Person, says: "I am very much looking forward to this launch event and celebrating the planting of the latest instalment of the Yeo Valley Community Woodland. We have a range of activities planned throughout the day and I would encourage as many families to come along and enjoy the fun. There's no need to book - just turn up!"
Those wishing to attend the launch event are encouraged to park considerately and enter via Silverwood Heights or the lane by the Kingdom Hall on Derby Road.
The council will be releasing several volunteer days over the next few months with the hopes of the extended, community space being fully open by the spring.
