North Devon's first Climate Action Week has been postponed until further notice.

The event, which was due to take place between 21 and 28 March will no longer go ahead on these dates as a precautionary measure over COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Climate Action Week had been organised by North Devon Council following their decision to sign up to the Devon Climate Declaration last year. The council had asked individuals, local organisations, community groups and schools to organise and take part in an activity with a focus on the environment or climate change. The aim of the week was to raise awareness of global warming and the ecological crisis.

The decision to postpone the event follows a number of event organisers cancelling their planned activities due to concern over the Coronavirus pandemic.

North Devon Council’s Lead Member for Climate Change, Councillor Caroline Leaver says: “We are extremely disappointed to have had to take the decision to postpone Climate Action Week. We appreciate all the time and energy that groups and individuals have put into organising their own climate-themed activities and would like to thank the public for responding so positively to this important event. We hope this news does not cause too much disappointment and we want to reassure everyone that we will bring Climate Action Week back at a future date. Whilst the event has been postponed, the council's work in tackling climate change and reducing its carbon footprint continues, as does its support of other organisations working to do the same."

North Devon Council’s Lead Member for Environment, Councillor Netti Pearson says: “It is with great regret that we have taken the decision to postpone our first Climate Action Week. We want to get the most out of the event by raising awareness of global warming as widely as possible and believe that this can be done most effectively when we can involve the whole community. Although it is disappointing for everyone involved, we are buoyed by the positive reaction and engagement from our community and look forward to rearranging the event for later this year.”

If any event organisers wish to continue with their planned activities, North Devon Council will continue to help promote these on the North Devon Climate Action Week Facebook page
