Residents invited to have their say on Council Tax Reduction Scheme
20 September 2022
A consultation on proposed changes to North Devon Council's council tax reduction scheme is being carried out. Residents are being encouraged to take part and have their say.
The council is proposing to make changes to its scheme which helps working-age residents on a low income to reduce their council tax bill. Pension-age customers will not be affected due to a government scheme already in place.
The council is planning to introduce some changes to make it fairer, simpler and easier to administer.
Proposed changes include:
- Increasing the maximum level of support customers can receive up to 100% of their Council Tax liability
- Disregarding emergency increases in national welfare benefits. Where the Government makes emergency increases to national welfare benefits, the scheme will give us the discretion to disregard those increases if they would have a negative effect on Council Tax Reduction
- The scheme will disregard certain crisis payments paid to taxpayers (Local Welfare Provision). During difficult times and periods of crisis, the Government makes payments to assist households, this change will allow us to disregard such payments so that it will not have an adverse effect on Council Tax Reduction
As well to the proposed changes, residents can also have their say on alternatives including the possibility of keeping the current scheme.
The consultation is now open and will continue to be until Wednesday 19 October 2022.
Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor David Worden says: "We would like to hear from as many residents as possible during this consultation period. It's important to us that we hear residents' thoughts and opinions on the proposed changes. Some individuals may have ideas that we haven't considered and it would be really great to hear them so if you have a spare moment, please consider taking part."
Residents can have their say and find out full details about the proposals on the council's website.
Paper copies are available upon request. Residents are being asked to call 01271 388877 and ask for the Benefits Team, who will arrange for the consultation to be sent to you. Paper copies should be returned via post to Corporate and Community Services (NDC), Lynton House, Commercial Road, Barnstaple, Devon, EX31 1DG or emailed to email@example.com.
