Apply for funding to spark positive change in Barnstaple
22 November 2022
Organisations and groups are being encouraged to apply for a new fund to help spark positive change in Barnstaple town centre.
North Devon Council's Community Sparks Fund will provide grants for local groups, organisations and businesses to organise pop-up events, projects and activities in Barnstaple, with the aim of creating a fun and vibrant town centre experience and deterring antisocial behaviour.
There is £10,000 available through the scheme, with grants of up to £500 available for each application. Projects should have a positive impact on the local Barnstaple community and help people feel safe, with a greater sense of belonging and involvement in their neighbourhood.
Events could include making use of redundant buildings and spaces; hosting activities in the evening; landscaping or creating art in neglected areas; hosting tours, walks and discovery trails, or running programmes of paid music or street performance acts.
The Community Sparks Fund is part of Safer Barnstaple, a series of projects and initiatives designed to prevent antisocial behaviour and incidents of violence against women and girls, as well as increasing feelings of safety in the town.
Barnstaple Town Centre Manager, Hannah Harrington, says: "Barnstaple has a wealth of community groups, and the Community Sparks Fund is an exciting chance for them to get creative and produce inspiring ideas and help make our town centre a fun and vibrant place to be. Our aim is to support a wide range of events and activities, so we want to encourage as many people as possible to make the most of the many opportunities for creativity Barnstaple has to offer and get their applications in."
The deadline for applications is Friday, 16 December 2022 and successful applicants will be notified in January 2023. A second round of funding will be available in Spring 2023.
Safer Barnstaple is a series of projects which will increase feelings of safety for users of Barnstaple town centre. The projects have been made possible through the Government’s Safer Streets Fund.
