North Devon Council (NDC) has announced that it will be offering two hours of free parking in selected car parks during lockdown to help enable local independent businesses to offer click and collect services.

From Thursday 5 November the following NDC car parks will be free to use between 4pm and 6pm daily whilst the country remains under lockdown restrictions:

  • Cattle Market, Barnstaple
  • Tuly Street, Barnstaple
  • Queen Street, Barnstaple
  • Bear Street, Barnstaple
  • Wilder Road, Ilfracombe
  • South Molton Central

Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor David Worden, says: "Councillors have agreed to allow a set period of free parking at a designated time to support local businesses during the second period of lockdown. This will help customers to make use of click and collect and other services so people can continue to support their local high street. During this second period of lockdown, many of our local businesses remain open, if they are essential, or are offering online services. Please continue to support them whenever you can during these difficult times, even if you aren't able to visit in person."

The council is currently compiling a lockdown shopping directory of independent businesses in the district who are either remaining open or are offering alternative ways of buying from them during lockdown. Local businesses are asked to email communications@northdevon.gov.uk, should they wish to be included in the directory.

Car parks charges will remain in force in all other NDC car parks, and between 8am - 4pm in the car parks listed above, Monday to Sunday. RingGo payment service is still the preferred option of payment, followed by contactless card. Cash is still accepted if the customer has no other option or there is no card facility, but residents are reminded to please use hand sanitiser before and after touching the ticket machines.
