When it isn't in use for its regular markets, the building hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including the annual classic car show and North Devon FOODfest.

North Devon Schools Chess Championships
North Devon Schools Chess Championships
- Hosted at Barnstaple Pannier Market
- In partnership with Barnstaple Chess Club
- Friday 17 July. Arrive from 9:30am. Games begin 10:00am. Finish approximately 1:30pm
- Open to school students in Years 4–11, including home-educated pupils. All participants must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Schools may enter individuals or teams of 4–6 players.
- Entry fee: £5 per student
Format:
Group stages followed by knockout rounds. All matches will be played using chess clocks.
Prizes:
Trophies and certificates will be awarded.

Applications will remain open until the day of the tournament. Advance entries are encouraged, but players are welcome to enter on the day, subject to available capacity.
Soft drinks will be provided. Lunch is not included, but there are plenty of food and drink options available within Barnstaple Pannier Market and nearby in the town centre.
A fantastic opportunity for young players to test their skills, represent their school, and enjoy competitive chess in a welcoming setting.
