Your new, blue recycling boxes for glass
All households in North Devon will soon receive a new, blue recycling box so you can separate your glass safely from the rest of your recycling.
Why are we doing it?
It comes after a successful trial of the boxes in Yelland and hugely positive support from the wider population to help our recycling crews by separating their glass throughout the pandemic.
The trial in Yelland involved around 800 homes and the outcomes were:
- the crew finished an hour earlier than usual due to not having to separate the glass at the kerbside
- no glass-related injuries have been reported on that round since the beginning of the trial
- there have been less problems with plastic being blown out of overflowing recycling boxes
When will mine be delivered?
The boxes will be delivered throughout August and September. We'll do our best to let you know which areas we are delivering in each week.
Why can't we carry on using our own containers like we did during lockdown?
The crews were overwhelmed by the public support for separating glass during lockdown but have reported that they had problems tipping the glass from a lot of the containers put out. By giving everyone a proper recycling box, tipping the glass into the recycling trucks is much easier and safer.
When can I start using my new box?
Once the box has been delivered, you can start using it straight away on your next collection. Lids can remain on glass items providing they have been washed and cleaned before putting in the blue box.
