1. Why are you doing these trials?

The trials are part of our larger plans relating to the delivery of our waste and recycling service. This includes our weekly food waste recycling, as well as a chargeable green garden waste service

Together, these changes are helping us move towards meeting three specific aims:

  • to increase the amount and type of recyclable materials that we can collect every single week
  • to meet national recycling targets - 50 percent of all household waste to be recycled by 2020 (we currently recycle 44 percent)
  • to reduce the cost of the overall service - we need to meet our financial savings target of at least 340,000 pounds

3. Can I opt out of the trial?

This trial is non-optional, although in exceptional circumstances we will look at ways in which we can find an alternative solution.

We still expect all homes to take part and to feed back any issues they may have so we can address them.

4. What’s in it for me?

By taking part in the scheme, you are helping us to fully understand how we may be able to improve the way we make our future waste and recycling collections. If the trial is a success, we will look to roll this out across the district, which will help us to save money, as well as increase our recycling rate. It will also mean we could ultimately be sending less waste to landfill, which is obviously better for the environment.

5. My bin is usually already full – how will it hold another week’s worth of waste?

We are enhancing our weekly recycling service, which means it will be even easier for you to recycle more items at the kerbside. This includes an additional weekly collection of all your food waste.

6. I have had a missed bin collection in the past – will I have to wait even longer for my black bin to be emptied if it happens again?

Hopefully with the provision of in-cab technology, missed bin collections should reduce substantially.

7. Will my non-recyclable waste - black bin - smell at three weeks?

Food waste will be collected weekly, which means the majority of your bin waste will be dry. If there are any items you feel may produce an odour, then double-bagging them should help. This includes nappies, incontinence pads, cat litter.

8. What about nappies or incontinence pads?

Throughout the trials we will be offering households a number of options in the way they dispose of nappies and hygiene products such as incontinence pads. We will be helping them on an individual basis if they approach the council for assistance.

If you need to dispose of nappies and hygiene products, such as incontinence pads, you can: 

  • double wrap the products and dispose of them in your black wheelie bin
  • if you find this difficult, we will assist you and, if appropriate, supply additional capacity bins
  • If this doesn't work for your household, you will be offered a sacked fortnightly collection with assisted collections if required

9. Can I have a bigger rubbish bin?

If you are managing your waste correctly, the likelihood is you will not need a bigger wheelie bin. In fact, you may find you could use a smaller bin. Compressing your waste and placing the bags in sideways may help to use your bin’s capacity to its fullest. 10. Will I get more recycling containers?

If you are finding you have too much recycling, you can have up to two recycling boxes, two green bags and two brown bags.

All households will also get a kerbside caddy for all your food waste. This can be placed out on the kerbside at the same time as your other recycling containers.

Also, during the trial, we will take away unlimited cardboard with your weekly recycling.

For your convenience, you can also have a small kitchen caddy, which you may choose to keep on your worktop to collect your food waste in. However, you cannot place this kitchen caddy out with the rest of your recycling – instead please use the kerbside caddy.

11. Can I place excess non-recyclable waste - side waste - out if it won’t fit into my black bin?

You cannot leave any additional side waste out alongside your black wheelie bin. Instead, please make sure all the waste you have that can be recycled is placed in the correct recycling containers and that you are making full use of the food waste service.

12. Can I place excess recycling out loose?

If you are finding you have too much recycling, we can supply you with up to two recycling boxes, two green bags and two brown bags.  

You can also take any excess recycling to Devon County Council’s Recycling Centres. These are at Seven Brethren in Barnstaple, Killacleave in Ilfracombe and Maclins in South Molton.

13. Where do I place my extra containers?

The only extra container we have given you is a kerbside caddy, for all your food waste. This is about the size of a small pedal bin. For your convenience, we can also provide you with a kitchen caddy, which you can keep on your kitchen worktop. However, this is optional.

You may also want to have up to two recycling boxes, as well as two green bags and two brown bags. These can be stored inside each other and used as and when you need them. 14. I live in a block of flats and have nowhere to store bins and boxes etc?

15. Do you still collect clinical waste weekly?

Clinical waste collections are still collected weekly or as frequently as you have previously agreed.

16. Do you still charge for bulky waste collections?

Charging for bulky waste collections has continued as normal.

17. Are you still be providing assisted collections?

If you have difficulty getting your waste and recycling out to the kerbside for collection, we will still be offering an ‘assisted collection’.

18. Who do I contact if I have difficulties with the new changes and trial?

19. What happens at the end of the trial?

We do not have an end date for the trial at present. This is because the trial may be very successful and it would be a shame to stop the collections if this is the case.

We will be asking for feedback on the trial and, based on our findings, we will then make a decision later to decide whether or not to roll the trial out across the whole of North Devon.

20. When will other parts of North Devon have the same arrangement?

No date has been set as yet, because we need to find out how successful the trials are.
