Britain in Bloom

NORTH DEVON DISTRICT COUNCIL HAS ACHIEVED NOTABLE SUCCESS IN ITS INVOLVEMENT WITH THE "BRITAIN IN BLOOM" COMPETITIONS.

Barnstaple has won recognition as the Regional and National Winners of Britain in Bloom in recent years and was also chosen to represent Britain in the Entante Florale Competition 1996. In competition with other European Countries, Barnstaple achieved the Gold Award in its population category.

The town has also spread it achievements world wide when it won a top award in population class in the Nations in Bloom Competition, where Barnstaple bettered entrants as far afield as Canada and the U.S.A.

Other local towns and villages have also achieved considerable success in Britain in Bloom and the Council has been able to help with entries in the competition by awarding grants and providing expert technical advice on planting schemes.

The Parks Unit provides technical advice throughout the District to towns and villages seeking to enter the Britain In Bloom and Best Kept Villages competitions.

Local entrants have achieved consistent success in the Regional and National Competition providing the North Devon area with a recognised reputation for "Floral Excellence".

The changing criteria of the Britain In Bloom competition has seen the Council encouraging local entrants to develop new concepts in their seasonal planting efforts. Greater sustainability is now the watchword and the concepts of re-cycling, permanent landscapes, and whole community involvement are fully encouraged.
