A new sports facility has opened in North Devon, which aims to help support more gymnasts reach their full potential.

The Falcons Community Sports Centre has been built next to the Tarka Tennis Centre in Seven Brethren, with the land being leased to them by North Devon Council. The council has also helped fund the £1 million project, along with Devon County Council, British Gymnastics and the Fullabrook Wind Farm Community Interest Company.

To mark the official opening, the centre held a special open weekend to allow everyone to visit the facility and see what it has to offer, as well as find out more about the club.

Falcons head coach, Mike Beagley, says: "I am delighted that this new gymnastics centre has become reality. With a growing number of young gymnasts wanting to join our club, we had quite simply outgrown our old venue. Now, this new site means we can support even more young people to reach their full potential, providing them with the facilities that they deserve."

Dave Marshall, from British Gymnastics, says: "The sport is in high demand, especially following a successful Olympics. The new centre will provide a fantastic facility that will benefit thousands of local people, with the potential of creating future Olympians."

The centre has been further boosted by securing much of the gymnastics equipment that was used during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Olympic gymnast Imogen Cairns was also at the opening. She says: "The club and region is privileged to have such a great gym.  This will see more people attracted to the sport.  I wish the club all the best in the future and hope they have success in all areas."

North Devon Council's Executive Member for Culture, Councillor Derrick Spear, says: "The open weekend was a great success and the facilities at the centre look absolutely superb. With the tennis centre just next door, the opportunities for people to enjoy sports locally are now even greater. I wish the Falcons all the best for the future."
