Members of the public are being encouraged to attend an exhibition this week (Friday 25 and Saturday 26 May) to find how Ilfracombe might expand and develop in the future.

As part of North Devon Council's joint emerging Local Plan, the community has identified a 'new southern expansion area', which would accommodate the large majority of growth for the town until 2031. The expansion area adjoins the southern edge of Ilfracombe and is located to the east and west of the Old Barnstaple Road.

To help develop these ideas, a team of consultants has been assembled to look at how the southern expansion area might best be designed. This has resulted in a draft master plan being created, which will be on display for the public this week.

Executive Member for Strategic Planning, Cllr Mike Edmunds, says: "The master plan illustrates the housing areas, street network and open spaces for the southern expansion area, together with a mixed use 'Neighbourhood Hub' making provision for a new primary school, community, medical, local shopping and employment facilities. It is anticipated that approximately 750 houses may be accommodated, providing for a range of different needs."

David Lock Associates have been leading the town planning and urban design elements of the consultants' work, together with a supporting team of architects, engineers, landscape architects, and quantity surveyors.

The consultant team has also been working closely with officers and members from Ilfracombe Town Council, together with local stakeholders drawn from businesses and community groups, to consider a range of design and development issues.

Mayor of Ilfracombe, Cllr Lynda Courtnadge, says: "We've been eager to engage all parts of the community about plans for Ilfracombe's future. As part of this, a series of stakeholder workshops have been held, where we have all come together to share our initial ideas. These ideas have now been explored and shaped, culminating in the development of this comprehensive master plan. I hope residents will now come along to see the plan for themselves."

One stakeholder involved in the workshops was Reverend Robert Harris, Chair of Governors at Ilfracombe Arts College. He says:" The growth of Ilfracombe is key to promoting a prosperous and sustainable future for the town. Protecting and enhancing our beautiful environment, supporting a diverse local economy to create more jobs, the regeneration of the town centre, and ensuring that new community facilities and infrastructure are provided in the right place at the right time are all important issues. So, we're keen for people to attend this exhibition, to find out whether they think this master plan covers all these issues."

The exhibition on the master plan will be held in the foyer of the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe, between 9.30am and 7.30pm on Friday, and 9.30am and 4pm on Saturday. Representatives from the consultant team, stakeholders involved in the development of the proposals, and officers and members of North Devon Council and Ilfracombe Town Council will be on hand to answer questions.and information leaflets will also be available.
