It has been announced today (Thursday 26 April) that this year's Tour of Britain cycle race will be coming to Barnstaple.

The Devon stage will start in the town on Saturday 15 September and will cover more than 100 miles of the county, before finishing in Dartmouth.

Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor Brian Greenslade, says: "I've been working closely with Devon County Council and Barnstaple Town Council to help bring the Tour of Britain race through our district. North Devon Council has also shown its support with a financial contribution towards securing the event. As a result, we believe this will bring a welcome boost to our local economy, with hundreds of cyclists and thousands more spectators and visitors expected to come through the town."

The event will be held across eight days, visiting England, Scotland and Wales.

For more information on the race itself, as well as details of the route through North Devon and local road closures, please visit the Tour of Britain website www.tourofbritain.com.
