Fine for dirty hotel
[Tuesday 09 Aug 2005]
An Ilfracombe Hotel has been fined £7,800 because of unhygienic conditions.
The Collingwood Hotel Ltd of Wilder Road appeared before Exeter Crown Court on Thursday August 4th where they were appealing against a sentence handed down to them by Honiton Magistrates in May.
The company admitted four breaches of food hygiene regulations by:
failing to keep the kitchen clean
failing to keep equipment that came into contact with food clean
failing to keep food under proper temperature control
failing to carry out a hazard analysis and implement adequate safety controls
The hotel argued that the Magistrates sentence had been too harsh and that they had failed to properly take into account the company's ability to pay.
The Crown Court fined them £5,400.
The circumstances came to light following a routine inspection. The case was heard at Honiton Magistrates Court on 25th May this year when the company was fined £10,800 plus £2,424 costs.
The Collingwood Hotel Ltd appealed against the sentence on the grounds of excessive penalty and the ability of the company to pay. Exeter Crown Court heard the appeal on August 4th and reduced the fine to £5,400.
