Severe weather

The Met Office will issue warnings when they believe there is severe or hazardous weather that has the potential to cause danger to life or widespread disruption.

All severe weather warnings are put on the Met Office's website and they are usually widely publicised in any weather forecast on TV or radio. They cover problems such as severe gales, heavy rain or snow, icy roads, thunderstorms and lightning, dense fog and also extreme heat and sun.

This page is used to provide frequent updates when severe weather is affecting council services. We also provide links to useful information on transport, weather and other government services, as well as advice on coping with severe weather.

Further information

From October to March, the emergency overnight shelter will open during periods of prolonged cold weather.
