Local Land Charges Register

The Local Land Charges Register is a statutory register that is open to free access following the removal of the statutory inspection fee. In order to search the Register you will require a level of understanding to enable you to conduct the search without assistance. If you do require assistance we are able to do the search for you for only £10. North Devon Council has made the Register available online and from 1 November 2011 this is the only way to view the Register.

The Local Land Charges Register online is currently made up of four elements. Below are two files, one is a list of local land charges and the other is a list of listed buildings. The other two elements are the planning register, part of which is available on the planning pages and the remainder (prior to 1987) of the planning register which is currently being electronically captured. Please note for properties within Exmoor National Park they are their own planning authority and you should contact them regarding access to their planning register.

How to search the online Register.

The instructions on the planning pages should be followed to obtain conditional consents. Then you will need to open the two files below. To search the files you will need to open the documents using Adobe Reader and use the search facility. The reference number for a local land charge is on the left hand side. The reference number relates to the original document which also contains a plan of the charge. Some of these are hard copies and some are on microfiche. A microfiche reader is available at our offices. If you wish to view a charge document please contact us prior to attending, quoting the reference number and when you would like to visit and view.

Please note the two files below are updated approximately once every 20 working days. Charges are being added, removed or added constantly. If you require a current result for a property or parcel of land within those 20 working days please make an application to search the register using the appropriate forms accompanied by the appropriate fee which is currently only £10.

Please note that the register file does not include a Part 3 charge known as the Advert Order. This covers nearly all of North Devon apart from the centres of Barnstaple, Lynton, Ilfracombe, Combe Martin, South Molton and Braunton. If you require confirmation of whether the Advert Order affects a certain piece of land please use the Find Your Nearest application.
