Private rented housing

The private rental sector performs an essential role in the provision of housing to rent to those for whom owner-occupation or social renting is either not available or appropriate to their needs.

What we do

Our aim is to make private renting an attractive option for people seeking secure, decent and affordable accommodation.

Where necessary we will take enforcement action to ensure that rented property meets the basic minimum legal standard.

The Private Sector Housing team will:
  • respond to complaints from tenants relating to the condition of their property
  • investigate allegations of harassment and unlawful eviction

Landlord and tenant relationships

We are working hard to improve the landlord/tenant relationships and following extensive consultation we intend to introduce a landlord/tenant support scheme shortly.

The scheme aims to provide financial and administrative support to landlords who are prepared to offer properties into the scheme and to operate in accordance to best practice standards. The scheme will also offer support to tenants to assist in maintaining their tenancy.
