Child protection

The protection of children in today’s society is one of the most important issues when organising activities for groups that would be classed as vulnerable

The Rehabilitation of Offender Act 1974 makes it illegal for an organisation to discriminate against an ex-offender on the grounds of a spent conviction.

In order to protect certain vulnerable groups within society there are a large number of posts and professions that are exempt from the Act. These include posts involving access to children, young people, the elderly and disabled people.

The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) carry out all checks (Disclosures). There are different levels of checks that depend on the level of access and the amount of risk involved in each situation. However it is suggested that anyone working with children should undertake an Enhanced Disclosure. There is a small fee for the disclosure, however if you are a volunteer organisation then there will be no charge for processing. (A volunteer is a person who performs any activity which involves spending time, unpaid (except for travelling and other approved out-of-pocket expenses), doing something which aims to benefit someone (individuals or groups) other than, or in addition to, close relatives).

For more information and advice on child protection within your club you can enrol on the Sports Coach UK course, ‘Good Practice and Child Protection’ which is a recognised course held throughout the country.

If you are interested in enrolling on a course or require further information about the Disclosure service, please contact us on 01271 388200. Or for further information on Disclosures, and whether you would be classed as a volunteer, then please contact the CRB information line on 08709090811, or the Criminal Records Bureau web site. logo - Internet Explorer: This goes to an external website
