Illnesses and Conditions
Infectious Disease and Food Poisoning
Who should I contact for further information?
Please telephone Environmental Health on 01271 388870.
What role does Environmental Health play?
The Team is concerned to prevent the spread of a particular disease, as well as isolate its source if possible. This is especially important for food handlers, who may help spread a disease, (although perhaps unknowingly), through the commercial handling of food.
The Team receives notifications from North Devon District Hospital and Medical Centres regarding possible infections. An Environmental Health Officer investigates each case for the reasons described above.
Statistics are also forwarded to the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre in London, in order to highlight trends and provide further information for research etc.
The requirement is to protect public health.
