Water quality
Our responsibilities
North Devon Council plays a major role in securing the quality of water for both consumption and recreational purposes.
To ensure the wholesomeness of the water we sample and carry out bacteriological and chemical analysis of water from private water supplies, such as boreholes and springs.
Expert advice is also available on water quality issues such as contamination and radon.
The prime responsibility for ensuring the quality of mains water supplies (or ‘public’ supplies) lies with the local water undertaker, South West Water
Where disputes arise concerning the quality of a mains water supply we may be able to assist.
The quality of water in beaches, rivers and lakes is inherently changeable. North Devon Council, in conjunction with the Environment Agency
