Food hygiene and safety

Our responsibilities

North Devon Council is responsible for:
  • enforcement of food safety legislation in food businesses in North Devon
  • registration of food businesses in North Devon
  • complaints about food sold or manufactured in its area in North Devon
  • investigation of cases of food poisoning and infectious disease
  • fish inspection
  • food sampling
Environmental health officers and food safety officers inspect food premises according to the risk they pose. The Food Standards Agency Code of Practice external websitedetermines how often each food premises will be inspected.

In addition, we provide a number of services to assist local businesses including:
Devon County Council external website enforces food standards which relate to the nature, quality and labelling of food.

Whether you are a member of the public or the proprietor of a food business, you should be able to expect a high quality of service from your local food safety section.

You can use FixMyStreet external website to report problems such as graffiti, abandoned vehicles and dog fouling anywhere in Great Britain even if you don't know the responsible local authority. FixMyStreet allows you to pinpoint the problem on a map and send a photo.

FixMyStreet will forward your report to our Customer Service Centre us and we will deal with it as we would any other service enquiry.
