- seizure and transportation of strays
- enforcement of dog fouling legislation
- educational role
- investigation of dangerous dogs allegations
Where the keeping of animals is alleged to result in statutory nuisance,
the matter can be investigated on case specific basis.

- dog and cat breeding establishments
- pet shops
- dangerous wild animals
- zoos
Other than through the licensing process, NDC has no involvement with
animal welfare. Farm animals are the responsibility of the Devon County Council's
Trading Standards - animal welfare team
, whilst DEFRA
may also have involvement.
Other allegations of abuse and cruelty should be referred to the RSPCA
and the police
. Offences against wild animals should be referred to the police or relevant wildlife
management groups e.g. RSPCA, RSPB
