The Square and the Strand
The completion of the Barnstaple western bypass has dramatically reduced the amount of traffic flowing through the heart of the town, freeing up acres of space for the public to enjoy on the Square and the Strand.

On 18 November 2007, the brand new Square was unveiled to the people of Barnstaple in a joint celebration with the switching on of the Christmas lights.
The new development has transformed the area and made the Square a focal point for meeting up and for holding exciting activities in the town.

- much simpler traffic layout that removes causes of congestion
- high quality public space at the heart of the town
- avoidance of unnecessary through-traffic including pedestrianisation of the Strand during the day
- improved public transport access to the town centre
- improved walking environment and simplified crossing areas
- better cycle links
- key safety features such as CCTV, improved street lighting and strong seating
Work is also almost complete on the Strand where equally innovative plans are restoring this historic site back to its former glory.
