A guide to North Devon Council's recycling scheme
Greensweep - a guide to North Devon Council's exciting recycling scheme.
How you can help protect the environment for future generations.
Your waste gets dumped on huge rubbish tips where the rotting waste lets off poisonous gases damaging the environment, taking years and years to decompose, polluting the air and spoiling our surroundings.
We can't keep filling up the ground with rubbish. Not only does it affect the environment, but it also takes up valuable land space. Who knows - we could even run out of space on the tips we use today and another site may have to be found and it could be somewhere near you!
That's where Greensweep can help.
What is Greensweep?
Greensweep is about improving the environment for everyone by reducing the waste we bury on rubbish tips and increasing the amount we recycle.
How can Greensweep help?
Greensweep is about helping you to do your bit.
It's about giving you the tools that you need to recycle more of your rubbish. Below are all the things North Devon Council provides to help you reduce your waste, recycle more rubbish and reuse unwanted items.
Green wheelie bins are for garden waste and packaging cardboard like cereal boxes. Around half of North Devon will have one of these with the aim of delivering even more in the near future.
Your green bins will be emptied on alternate weeks to your black bin.
The black bin is only for whatever rubbish you have left after you have recycled everything you can.
Please have a look at the 'What goes where' guide that you received with this leaflet to make sure you are recycling the maximum amount you can.
Nearly everyone in the district now has a black bin. Around half can be emptied by special bin lorries while others are being asked to use them for storing rubbish until we bring in some new smaller lorries that will allow us to get down narrow streets and lanes and to more rural areas that currently have their rubbish collected by small pick-up vans.
Your 'black' rubbish will be collected on alternate weeks to the green bins.
Collected weekly along with your green bag by our partners South Molton Recycle, the green box allows you to recycle all your glass jars, tin cans and plastic bottles.
Collected weekly along with you green box, the green bag allows you to recycle your newspapers and magazines as well as donating old clothes and shoes to be reused by others.
Brown bags are currently being trialled in small areas of North Devon. Brown bags are for recycling cardboard and if the trial is successful, this may be an alternative option for people unable to take green wheelie bins.
For a full list of all the different items you can out in each type of container so you can recycle as much as possible, please take a look at your 'What goes where' guide that came with this leaflet. It comes with a handy magnet so you can stick it to your fridge so you can easily remind yourself 'what goes where'!
If you did not get a 'What goes where' leaflet, or for any other Greensweep enquiries, please contact Greensweep Direct on 01271 374776 or e-mail greensweepdirect@northdevon.gov.uk.
