Food waste collections

Food waste recycling service has been introduced across North Devon.
This is in response to residents' concerns about the current fortnightly service. It also means we will be able to recycle more waste, helping to reach the council's recycling target of 50% by 2010.

Food waste recycling service has been introduced across North Devon.
This is in response to residents' concerns about the current fortnightly service. It also means we will be able to recycle more waste, helping to reach the council's recycling target of 50% by 2010.
How it works
To enable you to benefit from the service you will receive:
- a small kitchen caddy
- a reusable brown bag
- a 'What Goes Where' guide.
Homes not served by a green wheelie bin service also receive an additional kerbside caddy.
The service is easy to use. You simply empty all your raw and cooked food waste into your new kitchen caddy. If you prefer, you can line the caddy first with either a sheet of newspaper, kitchen roll or a corn starch bag - but please, not plastic bags.
Then, if you are on the wheelie bin service, you can empty your food waste from your kitchen caddy direct into your green wheelie bin, along with your garden waste. This waste will be processed through a new 'in-vessel composter' which will help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
If you don't want to leave food waste in your green bin for two weeks, you can also put it in your black wheelie bin, although it is important to note that the waste from your black bin will not be recycled.
For households not served by the council's wheelie bin service, the contents of kitchen caddies go into the kerbside caddies, which are emptied at the same time as recycling boxes and green bags.
Your cardboard recycling service
Every property will also receive a brown bag (similar to your green bag) which can be used to collect flattened cardboard. This needs to be put out for collection with your recycling box and green bag, so that it can be recycled and processed into new cardboard.
Cardboard will no longer be allowed in your green wheelie bin. This is because it will affect the new composting process.
