Street naming and numbering

The Local Land & Property Gazetteer (LLPG) Custodian is responsible for liaising with the Royal Mail Address Management Centre regarding the naming and numbering of new streets and individual properties and changes to any property name.

New Developments

When a new housing development is planned, the Planning Unit will usually start to discuss possible new street/estate names with the Developer when processing the Planning Application(s). Developers should start their discussion with the Planning Unit at the earliest possible stage, possibly as part of their pre-application enquiry or when they first register their plans. This allows time for consultation procedures to be completed.

Similarly anyone looking to split their property into several smaller units or erect additional units should contact the Planning Unit at the earliest opportunity to discuss possible name/number changes.

Our aim is to recognise local history or traditions when allocating names and will try to be consistent in an area that already has a ‘theme’ to the names used.
