What is Electoral Registration?
Electoral registration is the process by which a Register of Electors is produced by Local Authorities.
The current electorate for the North Devon area is about 74,000. This figure is obtained through the annual process of Electoral Registration. The figure fluctuates from month to month due to rolling registration.

Every August through to November forms are posted to every known residential property in the North Devon Area. The form requests that someone in the household completes the form on behalf of all the occupants and return it to us. All the information is then transferred onto a computer. The qualifying date is 15th October.
If a reply is not received from a property, reminders are sent out. We are obliged to make a visit to your property if no form is received which creates an additional cost. Ultimately, failure to return the form not only means that you and all the persons at that address are unable to vote but can lead to a criminal prosecution. Difficulties obtaining credit may also occur as a common way of checking who you are is to use the Electoral Register and credit reference agencies are legally entitled to this information.
If you move after the qualifying date of 15 October you can obtain an Application to be Registered as an Elector from the Electorial Commission's Rolling Registration website
If you do not receive a form during the months of September through to November at your property please contact the Electoral Registration Department immediately.
The Register is published in December of each year. The Register is used to provide a list of eligible electors should an election arise.
The Register is a public document and has other uses apart from the election provision. The figure for triggering a Mayoral Referendum is calculated from it. It is also used by the credit agencies and in its edited form it can be purchased by anyone.
