Why do we pay council tax?



The money you pay is collected by North Devon Council and helps us to fund:
  • Devon County Council: for services like care for the elderly and disabled, education, roads, recycling centres and disposal of waste, libraries, trading standards
  • North Devon Council: for services like refuse collection and kerbside recycling, housing, leisure, parks, street cleaning
  • Devon and Cornwall Police Authority: for services like crime prevention, law and order
  • Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority:for services like fire prevention, fire and rescue
  • town and parish councils: provide services locally and request a levy to be included in the council tax for individual parishes.

How is my council tax calculated?


Your council tax is based on a band, which is decided by the Listing Officer from the Valuation Officer. The bands are based on the open market capital value of the property as at 1 April 1991.
