About the Community Strategy
What is the Sustainable Community Strategy?
The first Community Strategy, called North Devon First, was published in 2002. It identified the issues and aspirations of North Devon. This document was updated in early 2007 and includes an action plan of practical projects to help fulfil the needs of North Devon. Community strategy and action plan (pdf)
Who wrote it?
The Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) – a group of about 60 members from public, private and voluntary sectors in North Devon. The LSP brings together many organisations and individuals who all aim to deliver better services to the people of North Devon. We are one of the key members of the LSP and as such have taken the lead on this project.
Why have a Sustainable Community Strategy?
The Local Government Act 2000 placed a duty on local authorities to produce a community plan to ‘promote and improve the economic, social and environmental well-being’ of their areas and to achieve sustainable development.
The individual members of the LSP are all working towards similar goals. It makes sense to work together rather than repeat the work we are all doing. By working in partnership we will save time, effort and resources to achieve the same results.
What happens next?
In the first half of 2007 the LSP merged with Torridge LSP. This was in recognition that Torridge and North Devon have social, economic and geographical similarities and therefore by tackling the issues together, time, effort and resources could be saved. The joint LSP will produce a joint Sustainable Community Strategy, due to be completed in 2008.
Does this have anything to do with LAAs?
Local Area Agreements (LAAs) are priorities that have been set by the Government. We must meet these priorities in order to get funding for our projects. Where possible, the priorities of each LSP partner have been aligned with the LAA priorities so that we can prove that the work we are doing meets the requirements of the Government.
