Burial of the poor

Who should I contact regarding burial of the poor?

Customer Services on 01271 388870 or e-mail customerservices@northdevon.gov.uk.

What do we mean by the term burial of the poor?

It is the council's duty to bury or cremate the body of any person who has died or been found dead in its area if it appears to the Council that no suitable arrangements for the disposal of the body have been or are being made.

The council may seek to recover expenses incurred in connection with the burial/cremation of the deceased. This would be from their estate, if applicable.
