Guidance Notes for Applying to the National Lottery Arts Fund

All applications to the Arts Council must meet certain criteria. In very brief terms here are those criteria:

Benefit to the public. Priority will be given to projects which improve facilities for the public or for artist and others who work in the arts. Equal opportunities must be shown in all areas of your project.

The long term effect on the organisations financial stability. You will need a comprehensive plan to show for managing your project so that it can be completed in the set timetable and budget. Also the future financial effect should be predicted.

Partnership Funding. Funding from other sources helps to show that the local community and other potential users are dedicated to the project. If you are applying for more than £100,000 then you will need to find 25% of the total project cost, if less than £100,000 - 10%.

Quality of design and construction. Aim for the highest standards of architectural quality and building design. A feasibility study may be needed for larger bids.

Quality of artistic activities planned. You should explain what effect the project will have on the quantity and quality of activity which you will be able to carry out in the future.

Relevance of the project. Does the project fit in with any local, regional or national arts strategies. You should seek the support of the relevant authority or authorities.

Contribution of artists, craftspeople and film video makers. The contributions of these people should be encouraged at all stages of your project. Priority will be given to projects that result in creating new work in the arts.

Plans for education and marketing. Lottery- funded projects should be enjoyed by as many people as possible. You will need to explain how your project will be promoted to the widest possible audience.

The process of setting up a lottery bid can be a long and complicated one, so we are here to help you out as much as possible.
