Barnstaple Pannier Market - Voted one of the Top Ten Food Markets in the Independent

Barnstaple's Pannier Market dates back to Saxon times when this then fortified town was considered important enough to be one of only four " Burhs" (or Boroughs) in Devon. The market evolved through Norman times, being held in the High Street and has continued to do so through to the splendid present day Pannier Market, which owes its very being to rather tragic circumstances.
It was built following the Great Cholera Epidemic of 1849, after which the outdoor market was closed after a visit by the London based Commissioners for Health due to various shortcomings of the outdoor market’s hygiene practices.
