'Start Up, Top Up' business rate relief

Up until October 2010, the council offered new businesses in the area ‘Start Up, Top Up’ business rate relief to supplement that given by the government under its Small Business Rate Relief Scheme (SBRRS).

The government scheme awards relief to all businesses that have rateable values of less than £6000, which decreases on a sliding scale, thus helping businesses with rateable values up to £12,000.

Changes to the government scheme which come into effect in October 2010, mean that additional rate relief will be given to small businesses. This will make the Start Up, Top Up grant redundant whilst the government changes are in place.

The government changes will be in place for a year, ending in September 2011.

The council’s Start Up, Top Up grant will then recommence in October 2011.
