Petitions

You can submit a petition to the council about issues affecting the district if you
live, work or study in the North Devon Council area (check your address at Your Vote Matters)

You can submit:

  • online using our e-petitions service
  • a paper petition

We will find it easier to resolve an issue raised by a petition if the petition is about the council’s services. North Devon Council’s services include:

  • waste and recycling
  • housing
  • environmental health
  • sports and leisure
  • museums
  • theatres
  • parks and open spaces
  • planning
  • building control
  • street cleaning
  • toilets
  • Ilfracombe harbour
  • benefits
  • community development
  • elections

Further guidance can be found in the North Devon Council petition scheme

The scheme sets out:

  • guidelines for submitting a petition
  • what the council will do when it receives a petition
  • how the council will respond to petitions
  • how many names should be on a petition
  • what you can do if you feel your petition has not been dealt with properly

Paper petitions can be sent to:

Senior Solicitor / Monitoring Officer
North Devon Council
PO Box 379
Barnstaple
Devon
EX32 2GR

All petitions sent or presented to the council will receive an acknowledgement from the council within 10 working days of receipt, which will set out what we plan to do with the petition.

Petitions can also be presented to a meeting of the council. These meetings take place on a regular basis. Dates and times can be found on our committee date page.

You can download a petition template (pdf 104 kB) for paper petitions.
